Fontaine, lavoir et abreuvoir (Case D DP/681) : inscription by order of 24 December 1986

Origin and history

The Cohons wash fountain is a historic monument located in the commune of Cohons, Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 18th century, it embodies the essential infrastructure of the villages of the time, combining fountain, wash and water to meet the daily needs of the inhabitants. These public facilities played a central role in community life, facilitating household chores such as washing linen or drinking animals, while serving as a meeting and exchange place.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments by order of 24 December 1986, this fountain is now owned by the municipality of Cohons. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage importance, reflecting both the 18th century utilitarian architecture and the social organization of the rural villages of Champagne-Ardenne. The location, although noted as approximate (accuracy estimated at 5/10), places the monument near Joyeuse Street, in the center of Cohons.
