Origin and history
The Museum of the country of Buch and the basin of Arcachon, installed in La Teste-de-Buch, obtained in 2025 the name "Museum of France". Its collections cover a period from the neolithic to the twenty-first century, illustrating the evolution of human societies in this territory. They highlight the close links between the maritime and forestry worlds, characteristic of local identity, through objects, tools and material testimonies.
The museum houses remarkable rooms, including three boats listed in the additional inventory of historical monuments. Its archaeological collections attest to an ancient human occupation, while a rich ethnological and industrial background, such as that of Castelnau-SAMG, traces more than a century of history of naval motorization. The usager forest, the last of France, is also represented as a key element of local heritage.
The topics covered include archaeology, ethnology, as well as local techniques and industries, such as osteoculture or gemage. These collections offer a global view of the lifestyles, know-how and transformations of the Arcachon Basin, from the early settlements to the contemporary era.
