Origin and history
The building at 16 Fénelon Street in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a building whose origins date back to the 15th century, as evidenced by the arcades discovered during a restoration. These arcades, typical of medieval civil architecture, structure the ground floor and recall the importance of commercial or artisanal spaces at this time in the cities of the Périgord.
In the 18th century, the building underwent major changes, including the addition of a balcony in ironwork supported by consoles, reflecting the taste for ornamentation of this period. Gargoyles, placed at the corner of the house, as well as a trilobed column window on the rue du Présidial, highlight the mix of styles between the Middle Ages and the modern era. These decorative elements suggest a desire for beautification while maintaining traces of earlier times.
The building has been listed in the Historical Monuments since November 12, 1963, a protection that specifically concerns its facades on street and the corresponding roofs. This official recognition highlights its heritage interest, both for its hybrid architecture and its integration into the historic urban fabric of Sarlat, a city known for its rich medieval and reborn heritage.
