Old cellar (Box BX 292): entry by order of 1 February 1988
Origin and history
The building located at 17 Rue Lagréou in Bayonne, dated from the 14th century, is distinguished by its vaulted cellar on dogives crosses. The arch keys, carefully decorated, suggest a direct inspiration from the architectural techniques used at the same time for the city cathedral. This cellar, now classified, would have served as a warehouse, testifying to Bayonne's commercial and logistical activity in the Middle Ages.
The construction of this cellar mimics the Gothic forms of the 14th century, when Bayonne, a strategic port city, experienced an economic boom linked to maritime commerce. The inscription of the cellar in the Historical Monuments by order of 1 February 1988 underlines its heritage importance. Its state of preservation and its architectural details offer a rare example of adapting religious styles to secular use.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum database, indicate that the exact address (17 Lagréou Street) corresponds to the BX 292 cadastre. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), makes it possible to clearly identify the building in the historic urban fabric of Bayonne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department (New Aquitaine region).
