Origin and history
The building on 6 rue Auguste-Leprevost, located in the city of Bernay in Normandy, is a 16th century building. This civilian building illustrates Renaissance residential architecture in this region, marked by a transition between medieval and classical styles. Its state of conservation and its stylistic characteristics led to its heritage recognition.
The facades and roofs of the building were listed as historical monuments by order of 26 December 1927, marking a first step in its official protection. Later, the street façade and the corresponding roof received a stricter classification on 7 March 1952, highlighting their exceptional heritage value. These measures reflect the importance attached to the preservation of this architectural heritage.
Bernay, a city located in the Eure, was in modern times a dynamic urban centre, marked by commercial and craft activities. The buildings of this period often served as housing for local merchants or notables, while sometimes sheltering workshops or shops on the ground floor. Their architecture reflected the social status of their owners and contributed to the beautification of the city.
