Facade on the street; check with its well; stairway with ramp (Box 02: 04 AM 19): inscription by order of 9 October 1996

Origin and history

The building at 20 rue Saint-Sauveur, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, is an example of a report building built in the 18th century. Its narrow façade and Louis XIV style staircase illustrate the architectural features of this period, where the buildings were designed to maximize urban space while offering some prestige.

The building was partially protected by an order of 9 October 1996, which listed in the inventory of the Historical Monuments its facade on street, its passage check with well, as well as its staircase and ramp. These evidences demonstrate the heritage importance of the site, despite a geographical location that is considered to be unclear (level 5 out of 10 depending on the source).

The Rue Saint-Sauveur, typical of ancient Paris, concentrates several buildings of this period, reflecting the increasing urbanization of the capital under the Ancien Régime. The building, although not open to the visit, remains a marker of the architectural and social history of the neighborhood, where the report buildings served both as housing and rental investment for wealthy owners.
