Origin and history

The Maison Butscher, nicknamed House Bubble, is an iconic architectural achievement of the 4th quarter of the 20th century, located in Vian in the Vaucluse. Designed by architects Christian Chambon and Jean-Noël Touche, both inspired by the principles of Antti Lovag, it embodies organic architecture. The construction permit was issued in 1978, and the work took place from 1981 to 1984, with completion in 1987. The house was partly built in self-construction by its sponsor, Claude Butscher, and is based on an innovative technique of double concrete hull projected on a metal frame, assembled by engineer Joël Unal.

The front door, by plasticist Roger Groslon, adds an artistic dimension to the building. This bull house is distinguished by its futuristic form and its integration into the landscape, reflecting the architectural experiments of the time. It was listed as historic monuments on 30 August 2011, recognizing its heritage value. The protection covers the entire house as well as the ground of its plot, located in the place called Le Pueys.

The Maison Butscher illustrates a period of architectural creativity in Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur, marked by collaborations between artists, engineers and architects. His story is also that of a personal project, where the sponsor Claude Butscher played an active role in his realization. Today, it remains a unique testimony to the experimental architecture of the 1980s, combining bold technical and aesthetic innovation.
