Peyremole dry stone cabin (cad. A 414): inscription by order of 27 December 1991

Origin and history

The Peyremole Dry Stone Cabin, located in Carsac-Aillac, is a historic monument listed since 1991. It stands out for its square base of 6x6 meters, topped by a pyramidal roof in lauze, and is surrounded by ruins. Its west side has a partially collapsed stack strain, while the other slopes have an outside. A small window pierces the south face, and an entrance door opens east. Inside, a floor delimits an attic space, supported by a corbelled structure, characteristic of local dry stone construction techniques.

These huts, emblematic of the perigordin landscape, were traditionally located in wine-growing areas. Their utility architecture reflects the agricultural and rural needs of the period, with local materials such as stone and lauze. Their presence attests to the importance of wine-growing activities in the region, as well as the artisanal know-how associated with dry stone construction, a technique widespread in the countryside of southwestern France.

The Peyremole cabin is exceptional in its dimensions, exceeding those of similar constructions. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1991 underlines its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its anchoring in the rural history of the Périgord. These often modest buildings played a key role in daily life, serving as shelters, storage facilities or workshops for agricultural workers.
