Origin and history
Café 10 Rue des Armuriers occupies a house originally dating back to the late 16th or early 17th century. At the end of the 19th century, this building was still home to Baume-les-Dames' last known armory. The shop was then transformed into a café, called Café de la Bourse, before becoming a roaster, then a pizzeria, and finally the current restaurant. The structure retains remarkable architectural elements, such as an arched wooden front, typical of the 19th century, and a ceiling decorated with roses and stucco vegetal friezes.
The front, located at the corner of two streets, is structured in two spans with brass arches, a style frequent at the time. Inside, the billiard room houses a Louis XV style fireplace, while the ceiling and front of the café were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 13 February 2007. These elements testify to the evolution of the commercial and artisanal uses of this emblematic place of Baume-les-Dames.
The building thus illustrates the transition between traditional crafts (armoury) and the restoration and trade activities that marked the city from the late 19th century. Its architecture and interior decor reflect the tastes and techniques of the time, while stressing the importance of cafes and sociability places in small French cities.
