Origin and history
The Café de la Paix, located in Valréas, Vaucluse, came into being in 1903, when Louis Faure founded the Grand Café Faure on the ground floor of a 19th century building. This place quickly becomes a space of sociability for local notables and truffle farmers in the region. Between 1904 and 1906, Faure entrusted the interior decoration to Monsieur Marentier, who realized a wall and furniture ensemble combining eclecticism and Art Nouveau influences, foreshadowing Art Deco. This now protected decor reflects the refinement of the café-restaurants of the time.
The café adopted its present name, Café de la Paix, in 1922, consolidating its reputation as an emblematic place of Valréas. Its original furniture and decoration, exceptionally preserved, illustrate the evolution of styles between the 19th and 20th centuries. Ranked a historical monument in 1986, it embodies the cultural and social heritage of the Popes' enclave, reflecting both local history and the artistic tendencies of its time.
Registration for historical monuments in 1986 includes facades, roofs, and the café room with its decor, highlighting the heritage value of this place. Private property, the Café de la Paix remains a living testimony to the Provençal art of living and the importance of cafes as meeting places in the early twentieth century.
