Origin and history
Marcilly-et-Dracy Calvary, now partially preserved, is a religious monument erected between the 15th and 16th centuries. Located in the church square in the village of Marcilly-et-Dracy (Côte-d-Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), it was entered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of November 21, 1925. This vestige, owned by the commune, illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in public space in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
At that time, calvaries served both as spiritual landmarks and as gathering places for rural communities. In Burgundy, a region marked by a strong agricultural and wine-growing activity, these monuments played a central role in daily life, punctuating processions and religious festivals. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church and local lords, who often financed their construction to assert their piety or power.
Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum indicate that the Marcilly-et-Dracy Calvary is located near the parish church, with an approximate address at 18 Rue des Tilleuls. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered "fair" (note 5/10), and no additional information is provided on its current state or detailed architectural features. Its inscription in 1925, however, underscores its heritage value, despite its fragmentary state.
