Origin and history
The Calvary of Échebrune is a religious monument located in the commune of Échebrune, Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It consists of a polygonal column resting on a base, surmounted by a cross bearing a Christ carved on one side and an ostensor on the other. This calvary, built between the 15th and 18th centuries, reflects the typical Christian architecture of these periods, mixing medieval elements with more recent additions.
The Calvary was registered as historical monuments by order of 22 August 1949. This official protection underscores its heritage and cultural importance to the region. It is located at the corner of the communal road leading to Echebrune, near the national road 700, and belongs to the commune.
At the time of its construction, Calvary played a central role in the religious and social life of local communities. They served as a place of devotion, a gathering for processions, and often marked strategic points such as village entrances or crossroads. In Charente-Maritime, a region marked by a strong Christian tradition, these monuments were also visual and spiritual landmarks for the inhabitants, reflecting their faith and commitment to collective religious practices.
