Origin and history

The covered calvary of the cemetery of Puy-l'Évêque is a religious edicle composed of a dais supported by four columns, housing a cross with sculptures called "crusts". Dating from the 15th century, this cemetery cross today rests on a modern base, while the church seems to reproduce an older work. Its modest architecture reflects medieval funeral traditions, where calvaries served as spiritual and commemorative landmarks in burial spaces.

Filed as a Historical Monument by order of 7 March 1944, this calvary belongs to the commune of Puy-l Its location in the cemetery compound, near the Place du Foirail, highlights its central role in local religious practices. Although its state of conservation and its precise history remain partially documented, its heritage protection bears witness to its importance as a vestige of rural sacred art.

In medieval times, covered calvaries such as that of Puy-l In Quercy, a region with a strong agricultural and religious tradition, these monuments also served as landmarks for processions or collective prayers. Their presence in cemeteries reflected the fusion between sacred space and local memory, a characteristic common to the villages of Occitanie during the lower Middle Ages.
