Origin and history
The Kerjean Calvary, located in Cléder in Finistère, dates from the 16th century. This Breton religious monument is distinguished by its dice-shaped base, surmounted by an entably decorated with a frieze with chain motifs. Six foothills in a quarter of a circle, drawing an openwork dome, support a circular and bumpy drum. The presence of bubons carved on the barrel recalls the great plague epidemic that struck the country of Leon at the end of the sixteenth century, giving the calvary a votive and memorial dimension.
The dual console in Kersanton, now empty, originally housed two or four statues of saints (disposed in pairs). The cruise presents to the west a representation of Christ and to the bishop in an attitude of blessing. These artistic elements, combined with the local stone, illustrate the know-how of the tailors of the period and the importance of the calvaries as supports of collective devotion in Brittany.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 18 December 1969, Kerjean Calvary belongs to the commune of Cléder. Its accessibility from the public domain and its state of conservation make it a valuable testimony of the Léonnais religious art. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) highlight its role in the Breton Christian architectural heritage, while noting documentary gaps on certain aspects of its history.
The site is located precisely at Kerjean (approximate GPS coordinates: 6 Kerzean, 29233 Cléder), in a rural environment characteristic of Finistère. The Creative Commons license of the available photographs and its SEO in the Merimée database (Insee 29030) facilitate its study and tourist development.
