Calvaire (Case AD 195): Order of 30 December 1930
Origin and history
The Calvary of the chapel Saint-Guirec is an emblematic monument located in the enclosures of the chapel of the same name, in Ploumanac This calvary is distinguished by its architectural structure: a base composed of two octagonal massifs made of cut stone, surmounted by a cube with chamfered edges. An inscription, now illegible, is engraved on this block. The monolithic stone which constitutes the calvary presents a barrel with also chamfered edges, adorned with remarkable sculptures.
At the base of the calvary, a Breton woman is represented dressed in her traditional costume and cap, her hands joined to the chest. Above, a skeletal Christ, draped with a cloth around the hips, is crucified, his feet resting on a dog's head. These sculptural elements, both symbolic and artistic, give the monument a religious and cultural dimension, typical of Breton art.
The Calvary was classified as historical monuments by an order of 30 December 1930, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This ranking underlines its importance in the architectural and historical landscape of Brittany, while ensuring its preservation for future generations. The monument is now the property of the municipality of Perros-Guirec, and its precise location is identified as being in the enclosures of the chapel Saint-Guirec, at 12 Rue de l'Oratoire.
Although the sources do not specify the exact period of its construction, the style and characteristics of the calvary suggest a medieval or post-medieval origin, during which the Breton Calvary multiplied, serving both as religious landmarks and as gathering places for local communities. These monuments played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the Bretons, often marking places of pilgrimage or meeting points for religious ceremonies.
The Perros-Guirec region, located on the north coast of Brittany, was historically marked by fishing, agriculture and maritime trade activities. Calvary, like that of the chapel Saint-Guirec, were essential elements of the landscape, reflecting the profound impregnation of Christian culture in everyday life. Their presence attests to the importance of religion in the social and territorial organization of Brittany throughout the centuries.
