Calvary known as "La Croix Blanche" (Case B 23): by order of 28 March 1977

Origin and history

The White Cross Calvary is a religious building located in the commune of Villemereuil, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. This monument, known locally as the "White Cross", is precisely at the intersection of the 25 and 25 bis departmental roads. It belongs to the commune and has been classified as historical monuments by order of 28 March 1977, reflecting its heritage and architectural importance.

Calvary, such as that of Villemereuil, were often erected at the crossroads or entrances of villages to mark a place of prayer, assembly or commemoration. In the Champagne-Ardenne region, these monuments played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities, serving as spiritual landmarks and symbols of faith. Their presence also reflected the organisation of the territories around the axes of communication, as evidenced here by its location at a crossing of departmental roads.

Although available sources do not specify the date of construction of the calvary, its classification in 1977 underscores its historical and cultural value. This type of monument, typical of French rural heritage, was often linked to popular devotional practices, processions or local festivals. Today, there remains a material testimony of the religious traditions and local history of Villemereuil and the Dawn.
