Origin and history
The Calvary of the Chaucenne Cemetery is a 16th-century religious monument, located in the cemetery of the commune of Chaucenne, in the Doubs department. This calvary is remarkable by its representation of Christ on the cross, accompanied by the Virgin and Saint John, forming a draft of the cross of Lorraine. The cask of the cross carries the cross with double cross, emblem of the Hospitallers of the Holy Spirit, suggesting a historical link with this religious order.
The Calvary was listed as historic monuments on December 19, 1944, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. It is located near the church of Chaucenne, in a funeral space, which reinforces its symbolic role within the local community. Its structure and stylistic details reflect the artistic and religious traditions of Burgundy-Franche-Comté during the Renaissance.
This type of monument, typical of the Christian regions of the time, served as both a spiritual landmark and a place of recollection for the inhabitants. Orvaries were often erected in public places or cemeteries, playing a central role in the religious and social life of villages. Their presence attests to the importance of faith and devotional practices in the daily life of 16th century rural communities.
