Origin and history
The Calvary of Loyat Cemetery is an emblematic monument located in the heart of Loyat Cemetery in the Morbihan department of Brittany. Built in the 16th century, it consists of a barrel and a finely carved granite base. The main medallion presents two biblical scenes: the crucifixion on one side and the descent of the cross on the other. The drum, hexagonal monolith, is decorated with leaf motifs, while the base adopts a form of gable. The angles of the square base represent the attributes of the four Evangelists, adding a symbolic dimension to the monument.
This ordeal was registered as a historical monument on 23 May 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its architecture reflects the Breton artistic traditions of the Renaissance, with sculptural elements typical of this period. The monument also includes older crosses, one of which, dated 1428, comes from the old church of Loyat, and another, from the 15th century, from Ploërmel. These elements, reassembled during a reorganization around 1650, testify to the historical and religious evolution of the site. The current, more recent foundation complements this composite structure.
Owned by the municipality of Loyat, Calvary is located at the approximate address of 10 Rue Haute, according to the GPS coordinates available. Its central location in the cemetery highlights its commemorative and spiritual role for the local community. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance as an example of Breton Christian architecture, while highlighting the adaptations and restorations that it has undergone over the centuries.
