Origin and history
Marville Calvary is a 16th-century religious monument located in the commune of Marville, Meuse department (55), in the Grand Est region. This ordeal, typical of the Christian devotion buildings of the time, was erected in a context where religious monuments played a central role in community life, serving both as a place of prayer and as a visual landmark in the landscape. Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 7 February 1920, this calvary is now owned by the commune of Marville.
Such monuments were often built to mark a spiritual gathering place or commemorate a local event. Their presence reflected the importance of faith in the daily lives of the inhabitants, as well as the influence of the Church in the social and cultural organization of villages and small towns in the Lorraine region, now integrated into the Great East.
