Origin and history
The Calvary of Malleville-les-Grès is a religious monument located in the municipality of the same name in Normandy. Dated from the first half of the seventeenth century, it is built of sandstone, typical material of the region. This ordeal illustrates the Christian art of the time, marked by a strong religious symbolism and a sober aesthetic.
The monument was listed in the Historic Monuments Inventory on February 3, 1971, recognizing its heritage value. Although little details are available about his sponsor or his precise history, he testifies to the local devotion and importance of the crosses and calvaries in the Norman landscapes at this time. These buildings often served as spiritual and community landmarks, strengthening social cohesion around faith.
The location of the calvary, near the road to Paluel, suggests a strategic location, perhaps at a busy crossroads or passage point. Its state of conservation and its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments make it a key element of the Seine-Maritime heritage, attracting the attention of historians and visitors interested in rural religious architecture.
