Origin and history
The Red Morne Calvary, erected in 1865, is a religious complex composed of a chapel preceded by a cross Christ, accessible by a lace path. Each turn of this road is marked by a small stone-cut, representing a station on the Way of the Cross. This monument, typical of 19th-century Creole religious architecture, illustrates the local devotion and integration of Catholic traditions into the Martinic landscape.
The construction of the Calvary is attributed to Mr. Saint-Clair Courche, whose name remains associated with this emblematic building. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 20 March 1990, the site includes both the Calvary and his Way of the Cross (Cadastre Park C 87). Owned by the municipality of Morne-Rouge, it bears witness to the importance of places of worship in the social and spiritual organization of Martinique in the 19th century, a period marked by an agricultural economy and a society structured around parishes.
The calvary is distinguished by its location on the heights of the town, accessible via the Route du Calvaire (5193), and its stone architecture. Although its GPS location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), it remains a historical and cultural landmark for residents and visitors. The photographs available, such as that of Aristoi under Creative Commons license, help document this still unknown heritage outside the island.
