Origin and history
The Calvary of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin is a religious building dating from the first half of the seventeenth century. Located in the department of Haute-Saône, it is distinguished by its figurative sculpture, typical of Christian representations of this period. The monument, owned by the municipality, was registered as a historical monument by order of 3 August 2009, thus recognizing its heritage and artistic value.
The location of the Calvary, at the approximate address of 16 Rue de Duez, makes it a landmark in the urban landscape of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin. This type of monument, common in rural and urban areas of France, served both as a place of devotion and as a visual landmark for the inhabitants. The 17th century calvaries often reflect the importance of the Catholic religion in everyday life, as well as the skills of local artisans in sculpture.
The registration of the Calvary in 2009 reflects a desire to preserve this heritage, characteristic of the religious architecture of the Franche-Comté. Although the available sources do not mention a specific sponsor or artist, its style and construction period allow it to be placed in the wider context of similar monuments in the region. The protection of the monument ensures its conservation for future generations, while providing an overview of art and spirituality from the early seventeenth century.
