Origin and history
Camp des Louvières is a protohistoric enclosure located in Vitry-en-Perthois, Marne department (Great East). This site, about 550 metres long and 200 metres wide, overlooks a plateau at 125 metres above sea level, offering strategic views of the Marne, Saulx and the Marne Side Canal. It is located south of Cuuvrot and north of Vitry-le-François, marking a notable geographical and historical point in the region.
The enclosure was listed as historic monuments by order of 26 February 1991, thus recognizing its heritage importance. A detailed description of the site is mentioned in the Mémoires de la Société d'Agriculture, Commerce, Sciences et Arts du Département de la Marne, dated August 24, 1859, highlighting its archaeological and historical interest since the 19th century. The camp is characterized by protected elements such as its ditch, rampart and space defined by its enclosure.
The site is located precisely at 1 Les Louvières, 51300 Vitry-en-Perthois, in a rural and strategic setting. Although information on its exact use during Protohistory is limited in available sources, its layout and structure suggest a defensive or community function. Today, there remains an architectural testimony of ancient occupations in the Champagne region.
