Origin and history
The Camp des Rouëts is a former military camp in Mohon, Morbihan, dating back to the early Middle Ages, probably the tenth century, although the eighth century is also mentioned. This 5-hectare site, lined with 10 meters deep moat and 15 meters wide, houses a 8-metre high castral mot, on which a tower was built by the Lord of Bodieu. The lower courtyard, at the foot of the mound, housed a well, barns, a forge, a pottery and houses, serving as refuge for the villagers.
The site could be supported by older remains dating back to the Gallo-Roman era. In the 12th century, a neighboring priory, the nucleus of the future village of Bodieu, implanted nearby. The camp was acquired by the General Council of Morbihan in the 1970s, at the initiative of Jacques Mercier, and then enrolled in historical monuments on 22 July 1975. It is also classified as a picturesque natural site by decree of 22 September 1975.
Since 1980, the association Les Amis du camp des Rouëts, founded by Jacques Mercier, works to protect and enhance the site. The remains, including moth and moat, illustrate the defensive and community organization typical of the High Middle Ages in Brittany. The site is now owned by the Morbihan department and is accessible to the public.
