Origin and history
The prehistoric camp of Mont-Guérin is an archaeological site located in Montmirey-la-Ville, in the Jura department (39), in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. This monument, whose origins date back to the Prehistory and Iron Age, bears witness to an ancient occupation of the territory, although the precise details of its use remain partially unknown.
Filed by order of 3 May 1913, the site is now owned by the municipality of Montmirey-la-Ville. The protected elements specifically relate to the remains of the prehistoric camp, but the available sources do not specify the exact extent of the excavations or structures still visible. The location of the site is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), based on data from the Merimée database.
During the prehistoric period and the Iron Age, fortified camps such as Mont-Guérin often served as refuges or strategic checkpoints for local populations. These sites were generally located on heights, providing an unobstructed view of the surrounding area, allowing movement monitoring or protection from external threats. In the Jura, as in other regions, these facilities reflect a complex social and defensive organization, adapted to the resources and dangers of the time.
Practical information on access to the site, such as visit times or possible restrictions, is not detailed in available sources. The Mont-Guérin camp, however, remains an important testimony of the archaeological heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, illustrating the lifestyles and construction techniques of ancient societies.
