Prehistoric camp (vestiges) (cad. C 124; B 395): inscription by order of 24 August 1982

Origin and history

The prehistoric camp of Moulins-sur-Céphons is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Indre (36), in the region Centre-Val de Loire. This site, whose remains date back to the Neolithic and Protohistory periods, was identified as an ancient place of human occupation. The protected elements include the remains of the camp, inscribed by ministerial decree in 1982.

Available data indicate that this site is classified as a Historic Monument, although precise information on its use or organization remains limited. The location, estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), corresponds to address 14 Route du Lavoir, near the communal wash. No source mentions detailed architectural elements or recent excavations.

In the regional context, prehistoric camps such as Moulins-sur-Céphons were often places of refuge, storage or assembly for neolithic and protohistoric communities. These sites reflect a social organization based on agriculture, livestock and emerging trade, characteristic of the sedentary societies of the time. Their presence in the landscape reflects the adaptation of populations to local resources and defensive needs.

The site's listing in 1982 underscores its heritage importance, although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not provide details of specific archaeological discoveries. The commune of Moulins-sur-Céphons, attached to the arrondissement of Châteauroux, thus retains a rare vestige of the first structured human occupations in the Centre-Val de Loire.
