Origin and history
The Aqueduct des Voûtes, also known as the Hers aqueduct, is a canal bridge built on the Canal du Midi to cross the river Hers-Mort. Located on horseback in the communes of Renneville and Gardouch in Haute-Garonne, it was designed by Vauban and created between 1688 and 1690 by engineers Jean Barrière and Pierre Berquière. This book is part of the many canal bridges of the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The aqueduct was included in the additional inventory of historic monuments on 24 April 1998. It reflects the technical ingenuity of the seventeenth century, allowing the canal to cross natural obstacles while maintaining a constant level of water. The Hers-Mort River, which it spans, is also known as the Hers River.
This monument is part of the hydraulic network of the Canal du Midi, designed to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Its construction marked a key step in spatial planning and the development of trade in Occitanie under the Old Regime.
