Origin and history

The Coudières roadway is an integral part of the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage architectural and hydraulic complex. Located in the commune of Arfons in the Occitanie region, this structure testifies to the construction techniques used to control the elevations and ensure the river navigation. Its role was to regulate the flow of water and facilitate the passage of boats on this section of the canal.

Works such as the Coudières road were essential to the operation of the Canal du Midi, designed in the 17th century to connect the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. In this region marked by a variety of reliefs, these hydraulic developments helped overcome geographical constraints. They also reflect the economic importance of river transport for trade and local development, especially for villages crossed such as Arfons.
