Origin and history

The canonial house of Cavaillon is a former building located in the city of Cavaillon, in the department of Vaucluse. Built during the first quarter of the 16th century, it bears witness to the civil architecture of this period in Provence. Its historic monument status, obtained in 2007, underscores its local heritage importance.

In the 16th century, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, canonical houses were often used as residences for canons, members of the clergy attached to a cathedral or collegiate. These buildings reflected both the social status of their occupants and the architectural influences of the nascent Renaissance. Their presence in Provençal cities marked the importance of religious institutions in urban organization and the daily life of communities.
