Origin and history

The Chapel of the White Penitents of Aniane, located in the Hérault, is a historical monument dating back to the 11th century. It has various architectural elements, ranging from pre-Roman and Romanesque to late Gothic additions and a classic Louis XVI facade. This blend of styles reflects the different periods of construction and reconstruction, especially in the 12th, 15th and 18th centuries. The chapel is located on the old village enclosure, which underlines its historical importance in the urban structure of Aniane.

Mentioned from the twelfth century as a parish church, it was used as a chapel of penitents from the Concordat, officially since 1867. The building has undergone several changes, with a 14th century Gothic bell tower, a bedside and 16th century side chapels, and a monumental 18th century portal. Two dates are visible on the vaults: 1589 and 1600. Disused since 1946, the chapel is now protected, with partial inscription in 1950 and total protection in 2010.

The façade of the chapel was inscribed with historical monuments by order of 20 February 1950, and the entire building was protected by an order of 2 August 2010. Owned by the municipality of Aniane, it bears witness to the architectural and religious evolution of the region. Its medieval bell tower and oculi on the west wall are remarkable elements of its heritage. The chapel is located at 10 Place des Penitents, in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region.
