The two capitals located at the entrance of the chapel: classification by decree of 2 May 1921
Origin and history
The Romanesque chapel of the Alleins cemetery is a religious building located in the commune of Alleins, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although its exact construction period is not specified, its Romanesque style and its protected elements, including two capitals located at its entrance, attest to its seniority and local architectural importance. These capitals were classified under Historic Monuments by order of May 2, 1921, highlighting their heritage value.
This type of chapel, typical of the small Provencal communes, played a central role in the religious and social life of the inhabitants. In medieval times, cemetery chapels often served as places of worship for funeral ceremonies and commemorations, reflecting the importance of religion in community organization. Their presence in cemeteries also illustrates the fusion between sacred spaces and the daily practices of the rural populations of the region.
