Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Jean d'Antibes, located on the Saint John road in the Alpes-Maritimes, is one of the oldest chapels in the city. Built in the seventeenth century, it has an architectural peculiarity: the octagonal part behind the altar suggests that it was erected near an ancient Merovingian Baptistery. Originally dependent on the abbey of Lérins, it belonged to the brotherhood of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde.
In 1765, the property was acquired by Sieur Cauvin, who married his daughter to Henri Guide, officer of the Grenadiers Royaux du Languedoc. The chapel, sold as a national property in 1796, was then bought by Henri Guide. She's been with the same family ever since. Its inscription in historical monuments in 1989 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for its connection to local religious and architectural history.
The octagonal form of the choir, rare for a Provencal chapel, and its past linked to a brotherhood and then to a noble family make it a unique witness to the social and religious evolutions of Antibes between the 17th and 19th centuries. Today, it belongs to a private company and retains a protected status, although its access to the public is not specified.
