Origin and history

The Saint-Roman chapel of Puy-Saint-Vincent is one of the oldest in the Vallouise valley. Until the 15th century, it was probably the only church in the village, giving it its first name: Puy-Saint-Romain. Very redesigned over the centuries, it was restored between 1977 and 1978, then transformed into a museum of agricultural life in the past and a temporary exhibition space.

The cartular of Oulx mentions in 1183 a chapel dedicated to Sanctus Romanus of Podio, confirming its existence from the twelfth century. A notarial act was signed there in 1493, attesting to its central role in local life. The present building, although modern in its structure, preserves ancient elements like a bronze bell dated 1720.

The chapel has been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since October 7, 1931. Its painted altarpiece, decorated with Corinthian columns and angelots, bears the inscription IHS and SAINT ROMAIN. The site dominates the valley, offering a panorama of the surrounding alpine landscapes, and illustrates the importance of places of worship in medieval mountain communities.

Nearby, the chapel Saint Vincent (15th century), classified as a historical monument, is dedicated to Saint Vincent de Zaragoza. His 15th century frescoes, restored in 1978-1979, represent religious scenes such as the temptation of Saint Anthony or Christ in Simon. These two chapels reflect the spiritual and artistic heritage of Vallouise, marked by the influence of missionaries like Vincent Ferrier, who came to fight Vaudian heresy at the turn of the 15th century.
