Origin and history

The chapel of the Confrerie Sainte-Croix, located in Brando in Haute-Corse, dates from the 4th quarter of the 15th century, probably built in 1487. On a rectangular plane, it is distinguished by its grey schist apparatus and its lauze roof. Inside, a unique nave leads to a flat-bottom choir, housing a master altar decorated with a baroque altarpiece with columns imitating false marble. This monument, classified in 2024, illustrates Corsican religious architecture of the late Middle Ages, marked by an external sobriety contrasting with a rich interior decor.

Wall paintings were revealed behind the stalls, revealing a typical Renaissance rinceaux decoration dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. These frescoes, combined with the altarpiece, bear witness to the stylistic evolution of the chapel, where medieval late influences and Baroque ornaments are mixed. The chapel, owned by the commune, is located at the place known as Parocchia, a site whose geographical accuracy remains modest (level 5/10 depending on the sources).

The chapel of the Confrérie Sainte-Croix is classified as a historical monument by decree of 20 June 2024.It embodies the island's religious heritage, where local history and sacred art intersect. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified, but its recent ranking underlines its heritage importance for Corsica and the municipality of Brando.
