Origin and history

The chapel of the Poraire is the last visible vestige of the former priory of the same name, founded in the first third of the 12th century in Chiché, New Aquitaine. Today, only this chapel remains, built between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, and remodeled in the middle of the 17th century. Its modest architecture, without sideways, contrasts with the richness of its murals, partially preserved. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the Last Judgment and a Christ on the Cross, are stylistically dated from the second half of the 12th or early 13th century, offering a rare testimony of late Romanesque religious art in the region.

The rectangular, small building reflects a rustic construction, typical of the small rural priories of the time. His heritage interest lies primarily in his painted decorations, whose stylized characters illustrate local artistic influences. These paintings, though fragmentary, evoke medieval spiritual concerns, centered on redemption and salvation. The chapel, entirely classified by decree of 24 July 2012, thus embodies an architectural and iconographic heritage, marked by nearly nine centuries of religious and rural history.

The site, which is estimated to be "passable" (note 5/10), is located at approximately 2 La Poraire, 79350 Chiché, in the Deux-Sèvres department. Formerly integrated into the diocese of Poitou-Charentes, this priory probably depended on a local monastic network, although the sources do not specify its affiliated order or its sponsors. The current remains invite a cross-reading of the monastic, artistic and peasant history of the region, from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
