Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul de Lumio, located in the Corsican village of the same name, was built in the 12th century. Originally it belonged to the Benedictine Ligurian monastery San Bartolomeo del Fossato, showing the historical links between Corsica and the religious communities of Liguria. Its initial architecture, although subsequently transformed, reflected the Romanesque features of the period, with a semicircular bedside and a sober facade.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the chapel underwent major structural changes. The original frame was replaced by a stone vault, requiring the addition of pilasters on the side walls to support the new structure. These changes partially altered its medieval aspect, while enriching its architectural heritage. The façade was decorated with a door framed with pilasters surmounted by lions carved in a round hump, a remarkable artistic detail. Inside, blind arches, supported by the pilasters of the apse, and a geometric decor of circles and diamond on the walls, illustrate late Baroque stylistic influences.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 30 July 1980, the chapel is now the property of the municipality of Lumio. Its state of conservation and location, noted as fair (5/10) in heritage databases, underline both its historical importance and the challenges of its preservation. Protected elements include the entire building, as delimited by the cadastre (Section D, Parcel 8).
