Origin and history
The Saint Lucia Chapel of Puy-Chalvin, located in the hamlet of Puy-Chalvin in Puy-Saint-André, is a rectangular religious building built between the beginning of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. Its oriental facade, surmounted by a bell tower-wall with an arcade, features a painted decoration dating from the early 16th century, illustrating the theme of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié. This monument, now classified, was originally erected as a place of rural worship and local pilgrimage.
On 23 June 1507 the inhabitants of Puy-Chalvin obtained the official authorization to build this chapel under the name of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, marking the beginning of its history as a sacred and community space. The theme of Mercy, depicted on the façade, reflects the Marian devotion typical of the time. The chapel, which became a communal property, was classified as a Historic Monument by decree of 22 November 1990, recognizing its heritage value.
Architecturally, the chapel is distinguished by its simplicity and its integration into the local landscape. The bell tower-wall, characteristic of the rural buildings of the region, and the paintings of the facade testify to the artistic and religious practices of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Provence. Although its exact location is approximate (level 5/10 depending on the sources), it remains a historic landmark for the town of Puy-Saint-André, in the Hautes-Alpes.
