Origin and history

The Girard butcher shop is an iconic monument located in Craponne-sur-Arzon, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this trade is unique in its Art Nouveau style architecture, both for its facade and its interior. The front, the furniture, and the polychrome tiles remained intact, offering a rare testimony of the craftsmanship and commercial design of that time.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 21 August 1992, this butcher shop illustrates the importance of small shops in the daily life of French cities at the hinge of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments highlights the heritage value of its architectural and decorative complex, preserved in its original state. The building is located in 2 place aux Laines, a central location in the commune.

The Art Nouveau style, characterized by its curved lines and organic motifs, can be found in the details of the front and interior decoration, including the earthenware and marble display. These elements, combined with the authenticity of the butcher's furniture, make this place a remarkable example of the commercial architecture of the time. The official protection of the store covers not only the front but also the entire interior decor, guaranteeing its conservation for future generations.
