Origin and history
The Roman career of Barutel is a major vestige of the Gallo-Roman period located in Nîmes, on the road to Alès. This site, registered as historical monuments by order of 25 April 1991, is distinguished by the exceptional presence of abundant traces of Roman exploitation methods. The techniques used by the Romans are still legible, offering rare evidence of their expertise in stone extraction.
Located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon), the career is referenced in the Mérimée base under the Insee code 30189. Its precise address, 207 Route d'Alès, allows to identify a place whose location is considered "very satisfactory" (note 8/10). This site illustrates the importance of quarries in urban planning and architecture of the ancient Nîmes, then called Nemausus, a prosperous city of Roman Narbonnaise.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage interest, while mentioning complementary resources such as the work of Théodore Picard on the Roman quarries of the region. Although the practical information (visits, access) is not detailed in the sources, its status as a protected historical monument makes it a privileged place of study for archaeologists and historians of antiquity.
