Roman career of the Roquet (cad. A2 399): inscription by decree of 5 February 1987
Origin and history
The Roman quarries of the Roquet constitute a major archaeological site of Antiquity, located in the commune of Montmirat, in the department of Gard (Occitanie region). They are precisely at the so-called Tirecorde and Hatelas, revealing a mining activity dated from the Roman period. Their historic importance led to their designation as historic monuments on 5 February 1987, thereby recognizing their heritage value.
The site illustrates the techniques of exploiting natural resources under the Roman Empire, in a region then integrated into the province of Narbonnaise. These quarries, like other similar remains in Occitania, bear witness to the economic and logistical organization of the Romans, who used these materials for the construction of public buildings, roads or local infrastructure. Their location in Montmirat, close to old lines of communication, suggests a role in regional supply.
Today, the quarries of the Roquet are referenced in heritage bases such as Mérimée, under the code Insee 30181 (Gard). Although their state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, their legal protection makes them a key element of the Gard's archaeological heritage. Their study contributes to the understanding of Roman industrial activities in Languedoc-Roussillon, now integrated into Occitanie.
