Gallo-Roman sculptures (Box B 6, 7A): classification by decree of 6 November 1973
Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman sculpture quarry of Saint-Boil is a major archaeological site located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating from the third century, this place bears witness to the artisanal and artistic activity of the Gallo-Roman period, with remains of sculptures still visible today.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 6 November 1973, the quarry is now owned by the commune of Saint-Boil. Its location, on the edge of C.V.O. 8, makes it an accessible site, although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10). The protected elements specifically include cadastral plots B 6 and 7A.
This type of career illustrates the importance of local resources and craftsmanship in the Roman Empire. The sculptures produced could be used to decorate public buildings, villas or places of worship, reflecting the Romanization of Gaul and the integration of local techniques into imperial art. The Gallo-Roman population of the region then lived in agriculture, crafts and commerce, with exchanges facilitated by the Roman routes.
The site, although little documented on its operating details, offers an overview of the methods of stone size and transport at that time. Its classification in 1973 underscores its heritage value, while raising the question of its preservation and presentation to the public.
