Origin and history
The house at 14 rue Saint-Martin in Laon is an emblematic civilian building of the city, built in the 15th century. It is distinguished by its staircase turret, a typical architectural element of this period, which justified its inscription in title of the Historical Monuments by order of 14 November 1927. This type of structure, often integrated with bourgeois or artisanal houses, illustrates the evolution of construction techniques and the concern of urban housing in the late Middle Ages.
Laon, the capital of the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region (formerly Picardie), was at that time a dynamic city, marked by its religious and administrative role. Turret houses, such as those on Rue Saint-Martin, reflect the relative prosperity of some inhabitants, often related to trade, crafts or church functions. Their presence in the urban fabric reflects a hierarchical social organisation, where domestic architecture also served as a status marker.
The inscription of the turret in 1927 underscores the heritage value of this element, recognized for its authenticity and state of conservation. Although the sources available (in particular Monumentum) do not specify the exact original use of the house, its classification contributes to the preservation of the medieval heritage of Laos, often threatened by urban transformations. The approximate location (12 or 14 rue Saint-Martin) and the poor map accuracy (5/10) invite further research to refine its historical knowledge.
