Origin and history
The house at 19 rue de l'Hôpital in Villebrumier is a charter house built shortly after 1810, in the first half of the 19th century. It replaces an old castle with a lintel sculpted in use on the eastern façade. This rectangular building, double in depth, preserves stylistic elements inherited from the 18th century, such as segmental arch windows and original small tile carpentry. Its interior organization follows the principle of a double thread with a central span through, typical of the cartreuses, directly linking the courtyard to the garden.
The building houses an exceptional panoramic wallpaper in the dining room, illustrating views of the Roman countryside and dating from the construction. This decor, combined with the interior distribution (vestibulum, large axial lounge) and the preserved facades, bears witness to the architectural taste of the period. The house was partially protected under the Historic Monuments in 2006, with an inscription covering its facades, roofs and the room with wallpapers (cadastre C 203).
The stone lintel carved from an arch in a braid, integrated with the eastern façade, constitutes a tangible vestige of the previous castle. This detail, combined with the persistence of forms of the eighteenth century in carpentry and openings, underscores the stylistic transition made during reconstruction. The location of the house, in the Tarn-et-Garonne (Occitanie region), and its state of conservation make it a representative example of the rural bourgeois habitat of the early 19th century.
