Origin and history
The house at 25 Place de l'Église in Grand-Fougeray is a wooden block building, typical of traditional Breton architecture. Built in the 16th century, it underwent major renovations in the 17th century, particularly in terms of its facade and roof covered with slates. This type of construction reflects local craft techniques and the use of materials available in the region, such as wood and slate.
Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 22 March 1930, this house is protected for its wooden facade and roof. This classification reflects its architectural and heritage interest, although its exact location has been discussed (notably between the Church Square and the Rue de la Justice). The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori according to the heritage databases.
Grand-Fougeray, located in Ille-et-Vilaine, was in modern times a rural town marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy. Wood-paned houses, like this one, often served as homes for wealthy families or artisans. Their gable on street and their wooden structure reflected both social status and adaptation to local resources, while playing a central role in the urban landscape of the small Breton villages.
