Origin and history

The house on the 4 Grande-Rue in Nîmes is a civil building dating from the 18th century, whose particularity lies in its wrought iron balcony on the first floor. This balcony, classified as Historic Monument by order of 4 March 1964, is distinguished by its wrought ironwork, consisting of three central panels separated by pilasters and decorated with various volutes. The larger central panel features an empty oval medallion surrounded by a metal drapery and a floret, while the side panels have intersecting volutes. The balcony returns, curved in a quarter circle, are characterized by a double frame surrounding a large flower.

This house would have belonged to the cathedral chapter of Nîmes, suggesting that it was part of the ecclesiastical property distributed in 1772 among the buildings of the Grande-Rue dependent on that institution. Its ground floor, occupied by a storefront, and its bay-lit floors, including two windows served by the balcony, reflect an architecture adapted to a mixed use, both residential and commercial. The artistic quality of ironwork, with its varied motifs and decorative details, bears witness to the know-how of the local artisans of the period.

The listing of historic monuments only concerns the wrought iron balcony, highlighting its exceptional heritage interest. The location of the house on a major street in Nîmes reinforces its importance in the historic urban landscape. Although the accuracy of its location is considered poor (note of 5/10), its official address remains the Grande-Rue, in the city centre. No information is available on its current accessibility or possible tourist use.
