Origin and history
The house at 49 rue du Bourg in Bar-le-Duc is an aristocratic urban hotel built in the early seventeenth century, between 1620 and 1630. This building rises on a narrow and deep plot, characteristic of the urban constraints of the time. Its architecture reflects the high social status of its successive owners, with elements typical of the noble houses of the region.
In 1763, the hotel was acquired by Étienne de Vassart, who undertook major interior renovations. The works include the creation of panelled rooms and the doubling of the house body, thus modernizing the structure while maintaining its prestige. These transformations illustrate the evolution of the tastes and needs of the Lorraine aristocracy in the 18th century.
The monument is partially protected under the Historical Monuments: the facades and roofs are classified by decree of 30 September 1994, while the interiors are registered since 27 February 1996. This dual protection underscores the architectural and decorative heritage value of the building, a witness to the fascists of Barisian society under the Old Regime.
