Facades and roofs (Case AC 371): inscription by order of 16 October 2000
Origin and history
The house located at 51 Maubec Street in Langon is a typical urban dwelling from the late 16th or early 17th century. It is distinguished by its eastern façade, adorned with carved decorations (bossages, canned pilasters, masks, sirens) on the first and second floor bays. Although the interior has lost almost all its original decoration, this facade and roofs were protected by an inscription to historical monuments on 16 October 2000.
Located in the centre of Langon (Gironde), this house is located on a pedestrian street today. At the beginning of the 16th century, it housed one of the most well-known closed houses in the city, a use in contrast to its present status as a listed monument. The ground floor now houses a business whose modern facade partially masks its architectural history.
The protected elements specifically include the facade and roofs, as specified in the registration order. The building illustrates the evolution of the urban houses of this period in Aquitaine, combining residential, commercial and, in the past, more marginal uses. Sources also refer to an approximate GPS location (49 Maubec Street), suggesting possible inaccuracies in geographic registers.
The house is referenced in the Mérimée bases and documented by the DRAC Aquitaine, which attests to its regional heritage importance. Its exterior decor, although partially altered, remains a remarkable testimony of late Renaissance architectural art in Gironde.
