Origin and history
La Maison haute, situé 1, chemin des Écoliers à Camon in the Ariège department, is an old tower of the walls of the fortified village. Transformed in the 17th century into a seigneurial residence, it illustrates the architectural evolution of medieval defensive systems towards residential uses. Its massive stone base and gridded wooden walls, typical of the region, make it a remarkable example of adapting military structures to civilian functions.
The building has been listed as historic monuments since 16 February 2007, recognizing its heritage value. The upper house combines at least three distinct properties on a defensive base, suggesting a mixed architectural program, both civilian and military. This monument embodies the local history of Camon, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and bears witness to traditional constructive techniques such as torchis and wood strip.
Architecturally, the High House is distinguished by its roof covered with canal tiles and its overhanging walls, characteristic of the buildings of the era. Its integration into the defensive system of the village reflects Camon's strategic importance in the 17th century. Today, it remains a symbol of the Ariegean heritage, combining military history and seigneurial heritage in a preserved setting.
