Origin and history
The house at 4 rue d'Armagnac in Rodez is an emblematic 16th century civil building, typical of bourgeois architecture of the Renaissance in Rouergue. Its facades retain characteristic decorative elements, such as vertical and horizontal sills, adorned with old mouldings, as well as horizontal bands highlighting the structure. These stylistic details reflect the high social status of its owners, probably local merchants or notables, in a city that was then expanding economically.
The structure combines wooden panels on the upper floor, a common technique in medieval and reborn urban centres, with a more noble stone façade on the ground floor. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 17 April 1950 for its facade on street and roof, this house illustrates the evolution of constructive techniques and aesthetic tastes during this period. Its location in the historic heart of Rodez, close to the commercial axes, suggests a role in the commercial or administrative life of the city.
The absence of sources detailing its precise use or its designated occupants limits the knowledge of its social history. However, its architecture reflects the prosperity of the urban elites in the 16th century, a period marked by the trade of pastel, leathers and metals, major activities of the region. The protection of 1950 aims to preserve these physical traces of an economic and cultural age for Rodez, then integrated into the Kingdom of France under Francis I.
