Origin and history
The house at 55, rue du Maréchal-Foch in Dambach-la-Ville is an emblematic building of Alsatian heritage. Built mainly in the 4th quarter of the 17th century, it incorporates Gothic elements probably dating from around 1500, supplemented in 1599 by an oriel (bow-window) on the ground floor and first floor. This oriel, directed by Georges Strub d'Ochsenhusen, bears an inscription, a date, as well as an emblem possibly evoking a mill manufacturer. The poster door, on the other hand, bears an inscription and emblem attributed to the winemaker GB (perhaps G. Burrus?) in 1699, the year he owned it.
The house suffered damage during the wars, without specifying the conflict concerned. Its heritage importance was recognized as early as 1930, when its façade and roof were listed as historical monuments by ministerial decree. The building thus illustrates the Alsatian architectural evolution, mixing medieval heritage (gothic) and Renaissance additions, while at the same time witnessing local activities such as viticulture and milling.
Today, the house is located in the Bas-Rhin (Great East Region), in a street whose name has evolved (formerly 79 rue du Maréchal-Foch). Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified in the available sources, but it remains a historical marker of Dambach-la-Ville, a village known for its preserved architectural heritage. References to trades as a winemaker or mill manufacturer underline its anchoring in the Alsatian rural economy of the 16th-17th centuries.
